Step Up to STEM

A free one week residential summer program for underrepresented minority students.

Step Up to STEM is an innovative interdisciplinary academic program that uses exciting real-world subjects to challenge rising 9th graders across North Carolina and build their skills in science, math, and communications. 

During the program's residential summer institute, students live and learn on the historic campus of North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, where they have the opportunity to take advantage of the many unique enrichment activities available throughout the Triangle area. The program is open by application to African American, Hispanic American, and Native American 8th graders who live in North Carolina.

Step Up to STEM has been made possible through the generous financial support of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Bayer CropScience, and Duke Energy Foundation and proceeds from our Summer Accelerator program.  To find out more, go to

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Do you know any students who are highly engaged in volunteer service? If so, please encourage them to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. One student in our school can be chosen as a Local Honoree and go on to compete for state and national recognition.  State Honorees receive $1,000 and a trip to Washington, DC; National Honorees receive $5,000.
