Course Description
Math 8 is a rigorous course focused on linear relationships, functions, and geometry. Students
will be utilizing the new Illustrative curriculum along with the eight mathematical practices on a
daily basis to meet the North Carolina Common Core State Standards.
Topics will be covered in the following order.
Unit 1: Rigid Transformations and Congruence
Unit 2: Dilations, Similarity, and Introducing Slope

Unit 4: Linear Equations and Linear Systems
Unit 5: Functions and Volume
Unit 6: Associations in Data
Unit 7: Exponents and Scientific Notation
Unit 8: Pythagorean Theorem and Irrational Numbers
Grading:
Grades will be updated regularly and can be accessed by the student and the parent on
Powerschool at any time. (See office for information on how to access Powerschool.) Grades
are calculated the same way throughout the 8th grade math courses. Scores are determined by
total points.

Homework: 20 points
Quizzes: 200 points
Tests: 300 points
Late Work/Make Up Work
When students are absent they are responsible for finding out what they have missed and turning in any work that is missing. Students have as many days as they were absent to turn in missing assignments. Students are responsible to obtain missed class notes from a trusted peer and are responsible for the material they missed.
Homework/Classwork assignments will be taken up to one week late and will receive half credit.
