Buncombe County Schools (BCS) employs thousands of extraordinary staff across the district. BCS takes pride in recruiting the best in order to inspire, educate, encourage, and elevate students on a daily basis. As a way to honor the hard work and dedication that staff pour into our school community, we are recognizing those who go above and beyond to make BCS the best. This BCS Staff Spotlight is in honor of National School Counseling Week and recognizes counselor Heather Cavner of Enka Middle School (EMS).

Ms. Cavner passionately infuses warmth and support into everything she does, fostering a nurturing environment for students to excel in. She takes time to build relationships with the students and staff at EMS.

“To me being a school counselor means advocating for students and collaborating with all who are involved in the school environment,” she said. “School counselors also support wellness, social, and emotional needs by creating school wide initiatives, providing one on one short-term counseling, offering group support, and connecting students and families with community resources.”

Principal Amberle Dalton shared that the impact Ms. Cavner's work on EMS is nothing short of extraordinary.

“She has a natural ability to connect and make students feel comfortable while empowering them,” she said. “She is very insightful when it comes to finding solutions to support students. Ms. Cavner makes Enka Middle a better place by being a student-centered teammate who wears a constant smile and has a positive attitude.”

Spend a day with Ms. Cavner and you will see that she has a heart for EMS and helping others. Her passion shines through daily.

“There are so many great moments that I get to experience as a school counselor,” she explained. “Really connecting and listening to each other’s stories can be extremely moving. Enka Middle really is a special school.”

BCS is proud to have exceptional school counselors at all 45 schools in the county. They make a difference for all students and staff. Thank you to all school counselors for everything you do.
