Buncombe County Schools (BCS) is focused on preparing students for their tomorrow, which means helping them find the right career path after graduation.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) business teacher, Jeremy Hawkins of Enka Middle is exposing students to a wide range of future job opportunities. Mr. Hawkins is always looking for unique ways to get students excited about the future.
“I think it’s important to show students the different trade careers available,” Mr. Hawkins said. “My students received hands-on opportunities from real life professionals such as Rogers Masonry.”
Rogers Masonry is just one of many different companies who have worked with eighth graders at both Enka and Owen Middle. This business brought tools and equipment to the schools, and allowed students the chance to learn how to build a wall.
“Students saw firsthand what a mason does on a daily basis,” Mr. Hawkins explained. “The goal of each visit is to promote the different trades, and spark an interest in each child as they prepare to think about what they want to be when they grow up.”
Mr. Hawkins said that some students have already expressed interest in pursuing a career in masonry. This year, Mr. Hawkins has exposed the students to professionals in manufacturing, lineman, nursing and engineers.
“Students came up to me saying they are interested in the apprenticeship program that Rogers Masonry offers,” he said. “If a student wishes to take the apprentice program, they would be able to earn a high school credit as well. We are thankful at Enka Middle to be able to have the opportunity to go to the Ingles warehouse and Duke energy. Our students have enjoyed learning about different careers.”
