The math achievements are adding up for BCS intermediate and middle school students.

Teams from schools across the system started the semester at the BCS MathCOUNTS competition, a fast-paced event designed to challenge both individual problem-solving and team strategy.

“MATHCOUNTS is such a fantastic environment because it lets students experience the genuine joy of tackling complex challenges together," said Nathan Arvey, BCS Secondary Lead Math Coach. "It really gives them a unique opportunity to stretch their problem-solving abilities and mathematical intuition in a different way than they do in their classroom."

The top top teams from the BCS competition are:
1st place: Owen Middle (Johnah Lehman, Josiah Reiter, Dorothy Shepard, Brie Sudnik)
2nd place: Reynolds Middle (Finn Cramer, Rhett Hogan, Marlo Hunt, Eli Stolte)
3rd place: North Buncombe Middle (Tilly Lennell, Carlina Niehus, Arturo Santoyo-Vaca, Dylan Zlab)
The top three individuals are:
1st place: Eli Stolte - A.C. Reynolds Middle School
2nd place (tie): Andrew Douglas - Valley Springs Middle School and Lucas McKee - Erwin Middle School
3rd place: William Nienaber - Koontz Intermediate School

Several BCS students earned opportunities to advance to the regional MATHCOUNTS, which led them to competition with students from the state at the North Carolina MATHCOUNTS competition, held March 27 in Durham. Students who participated in that event include:
Josiah Reiter, Jonah Lehman, Sadie Dillow, and Brie Sudnik of Owen Middle School
Lucas McKee of Erwin Middle School
Eli Stolte and Finn Cramer of A.C. Reynolds Middle School
William Nienaber of Koontz Intermediate School
Congratulations to all of our BCS participants!
